I like the top one as well. The BW just looks too plain to me

Both look monochromatic, in fact.
I tend do like the upper one, but;
if there was a bit of detail on the rocks nearby,
the B&W one might have become better...
Thanks for sharing&asking.

First of all, wonderful photo!

I like the top one when comparing the two as is.
I think the B&W one could benefit from some dodging - sometimes straight conversions without any pp seem to lose something. I'd never recommend cloning/moving things, but I figure anything I could've done in the darkroom I still do in digital.
"back in the day" I would've dodged the rays of light on the horizon in the top left, and (maybe) burned in the top right to make it more ominous looking.

maybe even crop it vertically to cut out maybe 15-20% on each side of the photo...

just random thoughts!

Thank you guys.
It was interesting to see that you choose the one that I liked best. I am working with B&W conversions and find it hard. The first photo I just increased the saturation a tiny bit but the light is more or less as it was in the morning. Lately we have got this kind of brownish morning lights.

Cheers

Hi Eddie!

The main thing that hits me about the photo is the light. Although the color in #1 is interesting, it distracts from the way the light sparkles. The B&W one enhances the bright light, but it is a bit flat. If there was some way to beef up #2 to get the rays in the top left to come out more and to put more contrast in the whole picture, I think the B&W conversion would be outstanding.

They're both beautiful, though! Very nice capture.

I like the top one. Reminds me of a duotone.
