Any critique would be appreciated as this is my first time in photography!

#1 is well done.
The soft look of the flower portrait works very well and the image layout with text suits beautifully.
#2 is a show of shallow depth of field, but not focusing on anything in particular. Always have a clear subject in mind and shoot it in a perspective that brings out the best of the subject.

hey thanks for your input, yeah for number 2 the perspective might have been better if it wasn't so close to the bus. Tried to focus on the "School" part. I really like the clear contrasting yellow and black.

ok, the information are on there now, by the way these pics are pp'd... ^^ The original colors of the flowers for instance the colors for the flowers were more intense, As for the Bus, I upped the color intensity of black and yellow. And some other adjustments. Glad you like em

Well done!

I like nr 2, and see the "school" as the attention point!

The first i good to. Good that you are artistic, naming the pictures and such. That gives more to the picture. BUT, be carefull with doing that because to a viewer it may not say anything.

Sometimes its better to let the viewer think about it.

Good job!

Those are some great 'firsts'. Just a note for the first picture, unless you used a tripod or something of the like, 1/5s is too slow, and will result in unsharp pictures. A rule of thumb is that the shutter speed has to be at least the same as the focal length (so ~1/60 for 55mm).

I thought the rule was double the mm. Anyway, great first start and keep them coming. JIM

And before we had a crop-factor

Still, 1/5th is too slow in any case, unless you're working with a tripod of course.

hey thanks for all the helpful comments! I already taken close to 1000 pictures in the week I've gotten the camera haha. Since this is my last week for the quarter [decided to go back to school] I look forward to taking more pictures. The weather here in California's been real crappy tho, even as I type it's raining. well, thanks for all the "Approval" haha ^^

yeah, with this shot, I put the camera on a tripod with a 2 second auto shutter after press. I think the center yellow portion was blurry because I didn't really focus. But the whole image went through some light light blurring in photoshop for the effect. I totally forgot to focus on the yellow portion of the flower though. Hence the blur there. ^^
