I had a good day today!

We had a great social and shoot and then found out that my Highside Exit" photo took 1st in the "Missed it by THAT much, Part 1" challenge on DPReview.

Awesome capture ... but a sad destruction of an SV650

Would have been cool if you could have gotten both subjects in the frame to sorta image what the rider was thinking as he was flying through the air.

Holy cow, I just noticed his boots. He needs to get something better that will cover up most of his shin! Those boots don't look track-worthy at all.

Oh my, both wheels and both feet off the ground sure glad that wasn't me. Congrats Mike on an outstanding image.

Mike, great capture there but I must admit my first two thoughts were not about how talented or lucky your were. But once I got over the mental image of the rider's pain I was able to congratulate you on a fine shot. Maybe better, more artsy, more left to the imagination than if it showed the actual violence occuring milliseconds later.

Just to add a thought of how fast this probably occurred, and how incredible it was that Mike even manages to capture it....... look at the tachometer (the riders hand is off the throttle and the bike is still at 8,000 rpm (3/4 to the red line).

I agree with Innershell that those boots are not track worthy - I can see skin and that is never a good thing.

So Mike, was the rider Ok? (I have visions of the bike doing a number on him)

Thanks everyone. Amazingly both the rider and the bike came thru this relatively well. Dustin, the rider, sustained only minor injuries. At first they thought he had broken his collarbone, but it turned out only a corner was chipped. Other than his boots he was properly attired for racing. The bike shed numerous parts but nothing critical was damaged. Both Dustin and the bike were back in business in July at the next race at Summit Point. Oh and he had better boots by that time.

I gave him a couple of 8X10s of the wreck.

Oh and here is the shot just prior that shows the bike beginning to slide out. I think there might have been a half second between this one and the exit shot. Front wheel has already elevated at this point.

The 3rd shot was obscured by a corner worker's station.

Congrats Mike. I love this shot. And the social thingy was a lot of fun. I just wish I didn't have to take off so soon.

Been there. Done that. Have the scars. But I don't have a great photo of the low altitude flight. Well done!

Hard to figure out what that guy did to get him into that much trouble. An early generation Yamaha R6 like that one doesn't really have the torque to light up the rear tire mid-corner, so I suspect he just went in too hot, panicked, and froze until the bike spit him off. As other mentioned, the street boots and what look to be virgin knee pucks suggest that he's pretty new to racing.

In any case, a well-deserved award!
