Kangaroo Point - Troubled Skies
Lens: 50mm Camera: K20D
Posted By: dosdan, 12-14-2009, 08:23 PM

Went to my favourite photo spot, Kangaroo Point Cliifs, Brisbane. This time I shot from the bottom. It was semi-cloudy and originally I was disappointed, but I soon realised the clouds added a different element of interest to the scene. As I started shooting before dusk, the colour temp changed considerably during the shoot. I'd left it on "Cloudy" WB, but as I shot in RAW, that didn't matter much. I tried some different WBs in PP. This set of 5 photos is in chronological order. The clouds got more blurred as the exposure times increased as it got darker. I quite like the effect. The first 2 shots were taken with a Pentax-M 50/F1.7, the other 3 shoots were taken with a Pentax-DA 55-300/F4-5.8 @ 62.5mm FL. Camera is a K20D.

Which white balance & exposure balance do you prefer in these sequences?

Here is an attempt at a backdrop shot. I think next time I need to get the camera lower and maybe closer so the person in the foreground is bigger. M50/F1.7 lens.

Dan.

3, 4, and 5 are too warm IMO. I'd actually like to see an image with WB of 1&2, but an exposure somewhere in between. If I had to pick one of the above, it would be 1.

1 or 2 - probably 1.

#1 seems straighter also (the buildings don't aren't as straight vertically in #2) which is a little off-putting. Even still, I think I prefer #1, though the blue in the sky in #2 looks great.

I'd say I like number 3 the best. I'm not a huge fan of the first 2 though, the skies look a bit odd to me and don't seem to flow as naturally as with the skies within 3, 4, and 5.

Dan, the result in the very last shot appeals to me the best.
Not too much blue with excessive brightness and not too warm with loss of lustre.
Of course, it could just be that the larger size and more detail makes it attractive.

I like #3 best because the clouds are kept to a minimum. In 2,4, and 5, the clouds start distracting from the cityscape. #1 is good from this perspective also, but I prefer #3 here because the greyer/darker tint to the sky makes the colors in the lights pop more to me.
