Took these 2 shots today in deplorable conditions (very dark & cloudy.) First obviously shows ISO1600 and second has burnt the sky out.
I put them up because I used my Pentax DA50-200 after getting very frustrated my FAJ 75-300 which was far too soft at long end. (Think I might get rid of that??)
Any opinions on these? Does anybody have same problem?

Keep the 50-200 - it's a great travel lens, and nice optics. Consider the Tamron 70-300 - it seems to be sharp at the long end. What aperture were you using for the shots?

If you have an external flash, you may want to consider buying a flash extender. Then you can do a fill flash instead, and drop your ISO, increase the aperture a bit, and have better shots. Fill flash is almost a necessity for these kinds of shots. Often birds are amongst trees, it's shady, etc. I know that sounds very odd at first, but it extends and concentrates the range of the flash gun. It's not uncommon to see it used on longer lens setups.

Do a Google search for "Better Beamer" or "Better Beamer Flash Extender". If you cannot get what you need, try Arthur Morris / BIRDS AS ART and look for it there.

Arthur Morris runs the site, and it's a wealth of information. Just a suggestion...

Cheers,
Marc

Nice shots, the first one is the best imo.
I've got the tamron 70-300 and it's a good lens for it's price, as long as you don't go above 280mm. Then the CA can become real nasty.
