First Real Shots From...
Posted By: roscot, 06-15-2007, 04:47 AM

My new studio set up.

My most abused victim.... errrr model, Harry
I'm trying to figure out exposure, lighting ratios, etc. The lighting seems a bit flat to me. What do you all think?

Pentax K10D ,Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD (IF) 1/60s f/6.3 at 75.0mm iso100

The one hardware issue I seem to have is that I can not sync at the full 1/180 sec. I need to be at around 1/60 - 1/90 to get sync. I've read some posts elsewhere that this is a common problem with the inexpensive radio trigger systems for studio stobes with Pentax DSLRs. Has anybody else had this problem, and found a workaround?

Alan, the lighting seems to be nice and even all over the dog. Why need just brighten
up the images with a touch of levels if you have Photoshop or a similar program.
Just my two cents. Pretty shots of a really nice dog. Regards, Freddy

I'm impressed that you can get your dog to stand still like that. I'd have to give mine some Valium, and then he'd probably go to sleep. To answer your question, they do look a bit flat. Can't help however;flash and studio lighting are not my areas of expertise. Dog is handsome anyway.

Based on the shadows I would guess that we are talking about a two light system with softboxes. What you could do is turn one of the lights down about one stop to create a little more depth. Other than that I would agree that some contrast added in PS (curves is a great way to do that, as has been mentioned) would perk these shots up quite nice.

For being the first shots with the lights I think these are quite good and you are off to a great start.

Looking good!

Hi Alan!

Congratulations on your new lighting setup. That's going to yield some great photos, if these are examples of what's to come!

Harry's looking good and I don't think these are flat at all!

Some great first shots with your new lighting setup! And, our furry friends are so often great models!

Some great suggestions to help alleviate the "flat" look so far. I'd just like to add that from the shadows in the second pic, the lights look like they're at similar 45-ish degree angles both camera left and right. Playing around with placement/height/distance and using a lower power setting can help.

During our long rainy gray season, I sure wish I had some lights to toy with. Congrats!
