Raynox 250 + Cheap 'n Nasty Sigma DL 100-300
Posted By: Christopher M.W.T, 12-29-2009, 05:04 PM

I just got my Raynox 250 off ebay today for $46AU

Must say the Raynox 250 is quite a suprise quality wise, I didn't expect to get as good results with an add-on attachment.

The lens is pretty bad though, if anyone bothers to look up a review on the DL 100-300 it's universally panned.

Was no easy to get my cat to hold still and with the shallow DOF made it trick.

Fun series with the Raynox.
I've taken a few pics with the Raynox 250 using the DA 55-300 and quite liked the results despite the shallow DOF. Setting the aperture to f14 will need a few trial pics to get the exposure dialled in and you will be wanting a tripod so I doubt you'll be able to get too much co-operation from the cat. I found myself seriously disorientated trying to get the focal distance so used my finger tip as an indicator of where the focal point is.

I consider the 55-300 + Raynox 250 a bad combo. The entire middle range vignettes badly, so you're limited to 1:2 macro or >2:1 macro. The Raynox 150 is a much better match for a 55-300; suitably powerful (1.4:1 macro) and doesn't vignette.

I don't normally use a tripod, because of wind and because insects move too much. I add light instead, preferably wireless flash, but if not then on-camera with a diffuser.

I Use a Raynox 150 and find that DOF is a problem I have to contend with.

I have a Vivitar Ser 1 105 macro and Pentax DA35mm lens, both of which are at the leading edge of Macro quality shots.

I feel that the Raynox is not quite at the same level as the above two lens, and, of course, other notable lens.
But, nevertheless, I find the Raynox on the Pentax DA 55-300 (for example), is a fun exercise and produces some very acceptable results.
Taken with 55-300/Raynox150 :

Not a picture to rave over in my opinion, but acceptable I suppose.

DOF problem more than obvious.
