NCAA Basketball with the DA* 50-135mm
Lens: 135mm Camera: K-7 Photo Location: Morgantown, WV
Posted By: aerodave, 01-02-2010, 11:46 AM

I went to the West Virginia - Ole Miss basketball game at the WVU Coliseum on Dec 23. I had some far away seats, two rows from the back of the upper level. But even at that distance (with the shots cropped to make up for the fairly short 135mm), the DA* 50-135 really came through. I've never gotten indoor sports shots like this before with my slow telezooms.

I was sitting about 175 feet away from mid-court.

Tip-off: 1/400s, f/3.2, ISO 400, 135mm

Wellington Smith finishing a dunk: 1/400 sec, f/3.2, ISO 800, 135mm

Wellington Smith for three: 1/400s, f/3.2, ISO 400, 135mm

"Truck" Bryant fighting hard: 1/400s, f/3.2, ISO 400, 123mm

Not bad considering the conditions.

It would have been really nice if they could have squeezed say another 50mm out of that lens but it is sharp enough to do some decent cropping.

The 50-135 is a great performer. Some good action shots in there Dave.

Shots #3 and #4 stand out. Thanks for sharing.

Not all sports shots need to be close ups. A wide view like these adds some of the atmosphere in which the game is played. Too bad there isn't a Pentax DA* 1.4x TC available.

Hey,
i like your shots for the atmosphere and the sharpness. i am not sure about the white balance.

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

Deimo, I'm unsure what concern you might have about the white balance. What little white appears in these images does, indeed, look neutral to me. Does anyone else think the WB looks off?
