What came first?
Posted By: photo_mom, 11-23-2006, 05:23 PM

Have no idea which came first - chicken or the egg - but I know what went down last and it was very good!

Well, all rain all day and no play left me pretty desparate for subject matter. So I took pictures while I was cooking and played around with placing the focus at different points in the photo just using the center focus point and recomposing.

All taken with K10D and the DFA 100mm. No flash except for the egg photo.

I focused here on the bubbles as they came off the eggs:

Focused on the lemon pepper specs on the wing of the left hen:

Focus is on the label:

Focused on the right leg of the front hen:

I focused on the petals at the bottom right:

Took this one yesterday before taking my daughter to school and going to work. Since Smugmug has started stripping the EXIF from all versions of the photo except the original, I copied the EXIF here.

If I weren't so stuffed from today those delicious looking birds would make my mouth water. Composition on both bird photos looks good. Color looks vivid too.

Thanks Clarence!

Yeah, we were pretty stuffed after these went down, too. We smoke (less distructive on the lungs, HA!) cornish game hens every few Thanksgivings just to get away from turkey.

Smoked Cornish Game Hen Recipe

Sure!

I usually rub the birds with oil or butter and then just liberally shake lemon pepper over them and inside the cavity. If I'm doing turkey I use peanut oil. For these hens I used butter. Just depends on what flavor you're after.

Then soak hickory chips in water for about 10 minutes, spread them around the smoker element, put water in the pan over the chips, and plug in the smoker. It was in the 40s here today so these 4 took just over 4 hours to cook. Nothing to do after that but put them on the table. If you put them in the oven to keep them warm it dries them out. The smoker gets to be between 150 to 200 degrees, so it's really slow cooking. The steam from the water pan is what really does the cooking and the smoke just gives it flavor. But the result is so much juice in the meat that it's rather messy to cut!

A turkey takes 5-7 hours depending on the weight. I usually get one with the thermometer in it just to make sure it's done. With the hens I sneak a little piece off the leg. If it squeaks when you chew it, it's not done yet. The only drawback to doing a turkey this way is no drippings for the dressing or the gravy. So I usually just use chicken broth.

Hi Tracy, If I wasn't so stuffed already..... Looks like you are enjoying your new toy. It seems UPS wants an extra work day to deliver mine. I expected it tomorrow, they now say Monday.

Tracy, they are still great pics like a fable unfolds itself before my eyes.

I would have to say that there seems to be some sort of substance in the water where the eggs were immersed into. Were the water mixed with detergent or with some soda? Looking bubbly (boiled?)?

Now I know you got a DFA100 macro as well. I want that lens too!
