10 seconds to get it right
Lens: 20mm Camera: K-x Photo Location: Cambridge, MD ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/350s Aperture: F8
Posted By: Eastern Shore Charlie, 01-23-2010, 08:10 AM

While visiting Cambridge, MD I went and visited the Blackwater refuge to see the sunset there. Winter sunsets are always colorful and a magnificent sight to see. I had my K-x and Sigma 10-20. I saw this scene but the geese where resting in the water in front of me. Before I knew it the geese took off to the left. While watching them fly they did a half circle and decided to fly right in front of me. If I could capture them when they flew in front of me what a nice capture. Easier said than done. Oh crap what do I meter on? To the left of the sun. The blue in the sky? What's my shutter speed? I will need use a fast shutter speed to stop motion and my famous camera shake when I get to excited when I see such a beautiful shot. Calm down make a decision because they will be here and gone.....This is 10 seconds of sudden freak out....
I chose a fast shutter speed and decided to meter on the blue in the sky. I locked the exposure and re-centered the shot....Whew...I hope you like the results....
Who ever says photography isn't fun is crazy....

Beautiful, well done! You obviously made all the right decisions despite the pressure you felt!

Nice, perfectly executed with time to spare. Great shot and story. Sounds like your experience in knowing just what to meter really paid off here.

It's nice place to visit....sunsets and sunrises are simply breath taking....when of course the crazy Maryland weather cooperates..

Thanks...Brought up the dark foreground in lightroom....would have liked the sun a bit less exposed...but reading and playing has paid off...
