One of my first shots with new 720nm IR filter from ebay seller citiwide. This doesn't look like real IR to me though...

Is this what 720 should look like, or is this just a really strong red filter?

Still figuring out photo embedding...

Try taking a picture of a human face. If the eyes come out nearly black and the skin glows, you are taking IR photos.

That doesn't look much like IR to me honestly, sounds like your conclusion is correct.

Here is a gallery of IR shots I have done with numerous cameras, to give you an idea of what 720nm and 900nm shots should look like:

Thanks for the input. If you were buying an IR filter, what cut-off would you go for? I'm considering the 850 or 950nm from ebay. My big hesitation is I'd rather have a cokin style filter, as it'd make composition easier.

Why do they cheap Chinese filters seem to not include IR cokin style? Or am I just missing them?

It all depends on what type of IR you want to shoot. The 900nm+ filters allow only B&W IR imaging. The 700/720nm filters allow the B&W as well as color IR imaging.

P.S. I own both types.

I was under the impression that DSLRs have an IR blocking filter in front of the sensor so you can't do IR photography with one. People who want to use DSLRs for astrophotography sometimes remove the filter to allow IR to be imaged. Am I wrong?

No you are not wrong. Every camera is different. The test I use is to point my IR remote at my camera. If you see something, some IR is getting through. The filter often only blocks 95% of the IR light.

That is one of the reasons you need such long exposure times with IR.

Yes you can remove the filter, but that really cannot be undone, however, you could use a screw on filter, but there is color shifting.

If you do remove the filter the DSLR would operate normally with an IR filter in place. IE you could take photos with 1/60 + shutter speeds etc...

If you filter is really good you may not be able to use IR filters in the 900 - 1000 range as not enough IT light will get to the lens.

Go to this thread to learn more about what you want to know. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/general-photography-techniques-styles/566...-infrared.html
It seems the best way to shoot infrared is to convert the camera and that is expensive.
