Cooper's Hawk, I think
Posted By: photolady95, 01-30-2010, 09:24 AM

I was sitting here in my room. Looked out the window saw this large bird fly into view. Sat a minute, grabbed camera and hurried outside. This guy sat on the wires long enough for me to get a frontal view and several shots. I was not prepared when he flew to the next yard so I missed the in flight shot.

Cloudy skies and I didn't care there is no details in the sky.

It's a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus). The primary wing feathers extend too far over the tail feathers, the dark bars on the tail feathers are too far apart, the size of the head is too large, the length of the bill is too great, the legs are too short for either of the Accipter species (Sharp-shinned or Cooper's).
