Black- Capped Chicadee - a cold one
Lens: 400mm Camera: Pentax K 10 Photo Location: Waterloo, ON ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/150s Aperture: F11

Very cold clear day here in Waterloo. Took the M 400/5.6 out to see if any of the birds survied the night. While not frozen to the branch this Chickadee was all puffed up trying to stay warm.

Actually he was probably warmer than I was. Damn it was cold.

I think you are getting close to the 'national geographic' stage here mate.
Did you use a tripod, and roughly how far away were you?

Thanks Jason.

Not quite ready for National Geographic but I appreciate the comment. Those Carnaby’s Black Cockatoos you’ve been shooting of late might make the cut though. Well done.

Actually, I seldom use a tripod even with the 400mm. I use my carbon fibre monopod with a Gitzo G1178M ball head. I find this rig works well enough with the shake reduction on the K10. I can just toss it over my shoulder and I'm off. I was able to use a shutter speed of 1/160 sec as I recall which gave me a little depth of field at f11 or so.

How close was I? Close enough I had to back up to the minimum focusing distance of 15ft. You know the old maxim - Get a big lens and get close.
