I was excited to see some Canvasback Ducks around as I don't remember seeing many at all for a long time here. I think the brutal winter has frozen their usual feeding area so some are in the upper Chesapeake diving for sea grass. They are much more wary than our abundant Mallards.

Nice captures of a beautiful duck. Have not seen a flock of Canvasback since deepwater duck hunting decades ago in NC (no, I did not shoot them all). Yes, quite wild compared to city park Mallards.

How did you get that close? They usually stay in deep water well away from shore.

I think they are a really cool looking duck . The water was open close to shore in this area because of a small channel, and a lot of ice and snow on the other side where it was shallow kept them pretty close. I still want some better pictures so I will keep at it. I hope they come back for a while.
