Wedding HMS Belfast, London
Posted By: Christian, 07-02-2007, 11:35 AM

Here are a few portrait snaps of my friends from a wedding I attended at the weekend. I treated them using Lightroom and adjusting some of the preset treatments available on it. none of them are cropped in any way which I coudl prob do with on the uniformed shot. The last one is funny if you know him.

using K10D and my new Sigma 18-50 DC EX f/2.8 Macro

The sigma is convenient (although I find it difficult to get the part of the shot I want in focus still) but I can't help wondering how much better they would look using primes... and I'd have had more keepers.

May have to treat myself to an autofocus 30/40/50 or whatever, as my manual 24 f2.8 / 50 M 1.7 are a lot of hassle in certain situations (ie. where drink is involved... although, when I get it right with those, the shots are a league apart). Maybe I'll find my preferred focal length eventually, buy that and sell the zoom?

Anyway.. the shots...

I like the colour, or lack thereof. It gives the shots a sort of timeless look. How did you get that effect? Fun shots - your friends look like they enjoy mugging for the camera!

Give yourself a pat on the back...oh wait, you already did.

I too like the muted colors and mostly interesting angles/compositions.

Good job Christian! Your modesty is only exceeded by your skill with a camera.

Just a thought - the 'up the nostril' shots are usually less than complimentary to the subject, although everyone seems to be having a grand time watching you crawl about on your knees while you shoot.

Yeah, how did you get that effect? Very interesting, and now that I think about it, I have no clue how to imitate it in Gimp. Love the first photo!

The colour effects are done in Lightroom. In 'quick develop' or whatever it's called. The blue 'cold something-or-other' only works in some shots and the sepia type effect called 'aged' or something also needs to be carefully applied. Plus you can lighten and play with contrast till you're happy with it.

The original lighting has to be right or you can end up with people who look like corpses.

As for crawling about on the floor... daytime champagne drinking makes it easy.
