I finally got my Dragonfly, along with a story
Posted By: little laker, 07-02-2007, 10:41 PM

Let me start by saying I'm sorry that the picture isn't better. You might understand after reading the story.

While I was out with Asad_Masede on Sunday in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada we ended up at the arts center where they were having a demonstration with several hundred people.

I had on my severe overkill for the situation Sigma 135-400 and wasn't going to try changing lenses in this crowd

Then out of the corner of my eye I saw an insect dive bombing someone there, and I watched it as it landed on one of the microphones. To my amazement it ended up being a Dragonfly
And it actually stayed on the mic for more than a moment.

It was tough photographing anything, with the steady stream of foot traffic passing by, so I was amazed that I had the chance to raise my camera. I extended the lens to 400mm and somehow took the picture.

Here it is

I should mention that I've never seen a dragonfly so far away from a body of fresh water making it an even more unusual photo.

Wonderful story there Stu and you're lucky to have got the photo that you did and in such a strange place. Most dragonflies can fly for extended periods of time, but the kind you have here (Canada Darner) is a typical flier so it isn't hard to believe it was so far away from water. Now that you have your first all the rest will be easier because the pressure is off so keep it going Stu!
