Papilio polyxenes caterpillar
Posted By: RBellavance, 07-04-2007, 12:55 PM

I found this little fellow in my backyard yesterday evening:

K10D + DA50-200mm + Raynox DCR-250 @ 200mm, f/16, 1/125s, ISO400

This is by far the best shot I've ever taken with my DCR-250 macro converter. The caterpillar was about 1.75 inches long, and the picture is not cropped at all.

I expect to be able to shoot some more (along with the butterflies they'll eventually become) since this species apparently loves parsley, and I have a nice little herb garden

That's real up close and personal. Would have been nice if the head was just a little lighter but that is nevertheless a beautiful capture with amazing detail and colours on those legs and feet. That's very altruisitc of you; giving up your parsley for the sake of art.

Thanks for the comments.

Randy, no I did not use extension tubes, only the Raynox DCR-250 (a 3-element achromatic +9 diopter) mounted in front of the DA50-200.
