I have posted these here as someone was asking about performance and IQ of this lens in the lens thread.

Comments and critiques on all photos are welcome.

Wow. Very very nice series. That ought to clear away some doubts Ive heard people raise about this lens. Even the 400mm shots look great. I can certainly say this lens beats the sigma 70-300.

Some comments:
1: Very lovely bokeh
2: This one doesnt look as nice, bokeh more harsh
3: superb! color is great, and thats at 400mm, very impressive
4: I like this shot, how the leaves gradully lead away

And the last one of the giraffe head seems brutally sharp if you look at the neck. the head is not as sharp. and the contrast and color is great!

Thank you Andreas

I posted these because of doubts about this lens' performance. I find it an excellent tele lens, very well built, an impressive IQ for a consumer lens of this range and still relatively small. But as it is not manufactured anymore, I fear the moment when I will have to replace it. Hopefully Pentax will release an SDM version of such a 80-400 lens.

Sorry to hear about that. The Tokina 80-400 appears from time to time, but mostly in ATX version (and not the better ATX-II). But I am sure you will be very happy with the exceptional 77mm ltd lens.

Outstanding , to say the least. Wondrous color and some really
special sweet shots of the little deer. So seldom see anything shot
with a Tokina. Probably because its very expensive. I'll look it up.
That lens can do no wrong by my eyes. Special, special, special .Freddy

Thank you Freddy.

The problem in seeing seldom photos from this Tokina lens is probably less the price, than the fact that this lens is not manufactured anymore in Pentax mount and is very difficult to get today.

I was just out for 5 days camping and fishing and took a lot of shots, very few of which are worth a hoot. I found my doubler before leaving on our trip and coupled with my Sigma 70-300 mm, I could get to 600mm. So I know just how difficult it is to shoot longer lenses now. These pictures by Tcom have floored me. Wonderful images, I haven't a clue how you guys do this but I'm gonna learn. I'm learning one thing, though, although that lens is very nice, it's how Tcom is using it is what matters. If you gave me that lens right now and took me to the same locations that Tcom went to I'd come back with a bunch of bad pictures.
Thanks for posting these pictures, I love them.

Morning Dominique,

Wow, what a fantastic set of photo's and, whilst they are all great, the last shot of the eagle (??) is outstanding, IVHO

Well spotted and captured.

Cheers,

Jack
