I like portraits of people doing something, as these are, rather than a posed portrait. These show people in their environment, living their life, and portraying them as a person.

Nice captures Yusuf.
They're good, and worth pursuing further to get the best results.
It can be pot luck to get the right expression and lighting, so keep trying.
Here #1 is harshly lit with a little too much fill flash - would have done better with a higher ISO and a toned-down balance between ambient and flash lighting. His pose is also a little too impersonal with the hands so much in the way, covering most of the frame.

#2 is a better result, nicely composed and lit, just lacking a little impact - I think it's the expression again, not being all that engaging. The bright background could also have been burnt a little to be less distracting, but a decent 'street' portrait.

Do you know what a portrait is?

As Ash has noted, the flash is a little harsh in the first shot. The fingers meshed together appear to hide a lot of the emotion in the photo.

The second shot works a lot better for me. Closer would have been nicer though.

How would you describe a portrait? Other than a representation of a true to life individual, actually being themselves?

I really like those pictures, particularly the second portrait...It appears random, unposed...lighting is excellent and the man has a face that seems to exude character.

Yes...very good...# 2 is excellent....something about it. Please post more of your work...I think you have talent and the 'eye' for interesting portraiture.

Thank you all for the nice words. Really appreciating.

Personally, I liked #1 more. Since most people commented that hands are hiding the emotions, certainly there is something wrong with it. What I felt was that emotion in eyes are looking more profound when rest of the face is hidden and somehow I liked that pose.

Yep, agree about harsh flash too, I guess I need to work on that.

I love these, the first one especially - it is interesting and unusual, and powerfully expressive!
