Oystercatchers along the Oyster Reef
Lens: 230 mm Camera: Pentax K-x Photo Location: Low Country in S.C. ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/250s Aperture: F5.8

The Southeastern Coastal Plain is part of the United States Shorebird Conservation Plan. This designation is based on estimated numbers of American Oystercatchers totaling less than 10,000 and the decline of suitable beach nesting habitat...so I was thrilled to get a chance to photograph them

They live along the oyster banks and I was told they open the oysters with their beak and feed their young.

Great captures Jan! I love their eyes.

You needed to give the bird in the 2nd shot a little privacy though!

Gee, this is a very nice series, Jan. I've never heard of an Oystercatcher (but then I barely know one bird from another), but they certainly have interesting colors, which you captured perfectly. Really interesting looking bird.

Great job.

These are fantastic shots . . . looks like they are checking you out too, with their beady little eyes!

I really like the first one, where he is checking yuo out, and the last one, with the bird in flight.
Cheers

I am with Jer never heard of them - then again I alos with Jer in my classification skills (crow , seagull, yellow one, big one ....) - Impressive series would be cool to see one actually open an oyster.
