Nature hooded merganser........

took a quick break at lunch today... never saw this duck before... very animated.. was setting claim for this part of the pond as a prelude to his spring courtship.... he came rather close to me... attempting to shoo me away as well.....

A most interesting duck, hated by fish farmers, adored by folks that like really weird sounds. Wait till you see him puff up his neck, stretch it double height and let his voice rein. Check back later for Ms. Merganser as she is very photogenic though not colorful. She has a great swept back hairdoo!

I have 500 shots of these guys and not one half as close as your last one, and not for lack of trying. Great closeup...you did something right to get him that close.

thanks all.... this was just dumb luck.... this little guy was very aggressive.. chasing every other male bird away! he came within maybe 10 feet of me, gave me a look.. hoping to get rid of me too.... lotta nerve in this duck... they also dive, really cool to see them disappear.... lotsa fun.... i'm hoping to see him and his wife in the future.... dave m

Strange creature, the crest thing slightly reminds me of cockatoos here. Good job on the series, once again I have never seen anything like it, TFS
