Girl in a Black Dress / Critiques Please
Posted By: Kemal, 07-08-2007, 06:40 PM

I took these with my K10D using the kit lens and a manual 55 mm lens from a KX. Tell me what you think, the rest of the set is at www.kemal.ca Online Art Gallery

Wow, I'll just comment on the first picture, which I believe is your best from this series; it has so much tension, the close crop on the right makes it seem as if she's struggling for breath! Or about to kiss the edge of the frame.

Kemal, you can't post pictures like that without giving me her phone number first.

You can ask anyone, that's one of the board rules

Oh, nice pictures

Beautiful shots, I really like the first one with her near the edge of the frame and the lines in the wall drawing your eye to her.

Not that she wouldn't draw my eye anyhow!

I'll have to agree with the others that the first is the best of the set. All around great B&W photo!

As for the other 5 photos, my comments are (respectively)
Wow! OMG! Wow! Wow! and Nice!

Number one works well, as do similar ones in your gallery. It's textures, lines, and contrast that all work for it. The others don't do anything in particular for me. The second one has an awkward pose, the fourth has potential with some different processing perhaps. I actually think #18 in your gallery is one of the strongest shots! Hmmm...Perhaps it's the direct camera address that I find a little off-putting. Keep shooting and posting, I'd like to see more!

I have to agree with the majority. The first one is, by far, the best.

Kemal, of the 27 photographs that you've posted to your site, I like 5, 7, 13 and 16.

Crop 5 to an 8x10 starting at either bottom corner and she'll have a nice "head shot".

7 is similar to the first photo you've posted in this thread, but I find it to be a stronger image. Though posed, it appears to be a more honest expression.

13 is another take on the theme... and the black dress gives the image a strong black anchor... however, one can see her face in 7 and that makes it a more powerful image.

Nice work!

Thanks for the replies so far, everybody. Does anyone use a reflector for natural light? What is your setup and how do you use it for a portrait situation?

I like the compositions and the b&w it is the lighting I have a problem with.
IMHO with the title "Girl in a black dress" I would expect to see more detail in the folds and fabric of the dress, black fabric is especially difficult to pull detail from. The interior shots are a bit flat a reflector may add enough bounce to help sculpt the form.
