Looks like you gave off camera flash a go here.
Nice try.
One point to note is that either the flash was placed too close to the subjects, or the light emitted from the flash was too harsh and needed to be diffused. This is what makes the contrast in the image too high and the highlights blown with sharply demarcated shadow regions.

The direction of the flash is also a point of contention, making or breaking the results. The spookiness of mood is achieved with side lighting as you've shown here, but needs to be reasonably well controlled or it produces the unattractive blown areas. Having the same light source a little further away and more closer to the plane of the camera may produce a more flattering result.

First, let me thank you for taking the time to give honest C&C. I love it, and it helps me get better!

Second, I like what I achieved given the fact that I don't have any sort of flash besides the on-board crap-tastic flash lol.

Here's my setup for this session:

As you can see, it's crude, but workable!

I'll do a re-shoot tomorrow and post results here. So you think moving the light a bit further from the subject (in this case, moving the subject left) and/or diffusing the light would help, ok, I'll try that! Any suggestions on what household things to use as a diffuser? A sheet of printer paper? Hmm, I'll look around. I love to DIY things and make-do with what I have.

Again, thank you for the time!

No worries.
If you're interested in learning more about lighting, then I'd highly recommend the Strobist tutorial series, especially Lighting 101 and 102.
