Great shot! Since we don't have them in this neck of the woods, how big are these fellas? They kind of look like a woodpecker.

Yes!

Finally a native Aussie bird!

Nice shot!

Do kookaburras sit in old gum trees (like in the song)?

Now- are there actually any koala and 'roos left down under?

If so- how about some photos?

Nice photo, especially nice since I probably will never see a live one.

Thanks Tom, appreciate that.
Kookaburras at full growth stand approx 12 inches high. Even in the wild they are a fairly friendly bird. They were called "Nature's alarm clock" because they join together in loud laughter at sunrise. Great to hear. Actually is member of the Kingfisher family.
Kangaroos, are plentiful ,noshortage at all. Koalas are becoming scarcer. Dogs and cars are their chief enemies at night, when the come down to ground to move from tree to tree.
Will see if I can add some more native wildlife for you over coming period.
This is a Lorikeet, (parrot about 6 inches). Sorry quality of shot not the greatest.
Thanks again....... Bruce.

It's really nice with the exception that it looks like theres a mirage duplication...kind of looks like the image is refelected possibly on a filter of some sort?

Thanks.. if your seeing the light mark in front of the birds chest, under his beak, as the reflection I might explain that actually it is a tree some distance behind in the background.
I will take it out with PP when I get to that. Thanks for your words on that.

Hopefully I'll be able to join in on the wildlife shots soon ... we always get the kookaburras at home of a morning calling out.

I can say that I haven't seen a koala in the wild myself though ... quite scarce indeed.

Have had to dodge the odd wallaby on the road though early in the morning (they are out feeding that time of morning) ... not fun when they jump out in front of you from the bush off the side of the road ... especially when doing about 100 kays.

Gan Gan Cockatoos are out lately though due to the cold.

Crikey mate. I've seen a koala in the wild in Oz - but they don't exactly make themselves obvious do they? Generally just sit there and move slightly every now and then.

Koalas

I do a bit of work at the local botanical gardens, and have seen some in the wild around there but not so recently.
Actually there are a couple of colonies around the Port Stephens area of NSW.
Difficult to pick up during the day, unless you want a very stiff neck from constantly looking up.
Actually had one in a tree in my Mother-in-law's back yard. That was a thrill.
However, urban sprawl; dogs and cars(at night) are thier biggest threat.
Placed a posting of one I shot (should I say snapped) a while short while ago.
