Rense - I'm with Peter. They're all cool, but I like number 3. Can you give us a quick comment on the age and history of this castle?

Hope you (Rense and Jer) don't mind if I answer

Doorwerth Castle is a medieval castle situated on the river Rhine near the city of Arnhem, Netherlands. The original castle, probably wooden, is first mentioned in 1260 when it was besieged and burned to the ground, after which it was rebuilt in stone. In 1280 this second castle was again besieged and this time the bailey was burned down. During the 14th and 15th century the castle was continually enlarged. By 1560 Doorwerth Castle had almost reached its present appearance. Around 1637 the bailey was rebuilt to its present appearance and a dike was built around the castle to protect it from flooding of the river Rhine.

The castle suffered heavily in 1944 as a result of German destructiveness and Allied shelling during World War II. Directly after WW II a lengthy restoration began that lasted until 1983. By then the castle was back into its 18th century state and was owned by the "Friends of the Castles of Gelderland" foundation who now maintain the castle as a museum.

I just took the English Wiki version (it was a longer, so I took out some parts)

These are great shots! I like #3 and #4 the most, but the others are great as is Iris' addition. And, always for me, the addition of the history "makes" the shots. Without the background, I feel something is missing.

I have a question: in a couple pictures there are areas that seem like windows, but there is an "X" appearance to them. (Or an hourglass look). Is that because of a shutter design? Curtains?

Thank you for sharing these. I love history and even though this is outside my present (totally amatuer) area of study, I love seeing this old castle. How wonderful that it was restored. Living in a place where "keep the dirt flying" is the city motto, I love to see that people elsewhere care for their heritage.
