My Kids..
Posted By: Scott Rylance, 11-26-2006, 07:17 PM

My wife asked me to take some shots of the Kids for the family, for Xmas.
These are the few that I'm most happy with...still need a bit of work.
Man...what's the saying, never work with kids or Animals, well it's right, it was hard work.
Any comments welcome.

Sheesh

Bloody hell Scott, what a set of amazing photos.

You have absolutely nailed those mate. The conversion are bang on and they are *just *right in terms of exposure and sharpness and contrast. I'm in awe.

I notice the one with them sitting down, there's quite a distance between your son and daughter yet your daughter is as in focus as your son so you've done really well to get the right aperture for that kind of depth.

Man this is what it's about. B&W is a must for people, keep it up, you're on the money.

And lastly, though i love them all, perfect captures of your little ones, i really like the one of your son and his shadow. That is mastery. Damn you! Hahaha.

Very inspiring, the bar has been raised.

Ben

What cute kids!
wonderful shots!
which method did you choose to convert from RGB to greyscale?
the exposure looks spot on.
which lens? and diffuser?

I am very weak in the kids shots so I can only hope to match shots like this.

cheers

If I had to choose, it would be the first.

I like YOUR choice of monochrome - excellent. Meant only as a suggestion not a critique but if you could lighten-up the boys face just a tiny bit on the first.

Your technique reminds me of the many shots found of those thematic posters in stores.

Well done Scott.

JC
Thanks JC, your comments are much appreciated.
Funny you should mention the light on my little boys face...when I first printed this one it was a bit dark...so I lightened his face a little, and it was much better.
Cheers.

Brilliant work Scott.. Composition is fantastic and the B&W works very well... My fav is the 3rd, I think it has to do with the effective use of light and shadow...
Thanks a heap Joele. I really like that one as well. My girl had had enough, so I though I'd grab the moment while my wife was chasing after Mia.
Cheers.

Hey Ben,
I really appreciate all your kind words mate.
The one with them sitting down I had to do the most work on. It was a bit dark and Mia was in focus, the DOF was a bit narrower than I hoped for so I had to sharpen up his face as well.
I'm lovin the B&W and I think I'm getting better with the conversions, so I'm happy there.
I like this one too.. it was just a split second shot, sometimes they're the best.
Thanks again Ben, a lot of your shots inspire me...so that makes us even.

Thank you.
I channel mixed in CS2, shadow/highlights, levels, contrast, USM.
No set figures, just adjust until it looks right.
The lens was the SA 50-200mm Schnieder, and Sigma EF500 DG ST Flash
no diffuser, but -two stops on flash comp.
Cheers.

Thanks Stern,
The flash was used on most shots so the shutter speed was around 1/50 to 1/100 on most of them. The lens is the Samsung version of the DA 50-200mm.

Scott, did you by any chance lighten the boy's face on the first image from when you first posted? Am I seeing things differently today?

Scott, how come your son already wear glasses at this age? Short sighted or ...?

The frames does make him look seasoned and scholar like. I wonder if you made him to wear that for the shots...

just a delusion i am having at the moment ...
