Just finished a paid shoot for a friend. 12 photos to make a calendar.
This is the shot for April, my favourite and one I think turned out really well..

You wouldn't happen to have any larger of a version for us would you? I like the selective color, and I think this is a pretty good portrait/candid photo.

Very nice photo, +1 for the larger version.

What did you use for this effect? History brush?

Very nice shot, I really like the selective coloring you did on this.

Hey guys,

sorry been away for a couple of days,,
here is a larger verison of this photo...
I used the magic wand tool to select the colours and then desaturated the background for the effect..
Might upload the may one very soon too if anyone is interested...

Larger image helps a lot -- thanks!

For me the selective colouring adds nothing to the shot. In fact I think selective colouring adds nothing to 99% of shots. Too gimicky.

Besides, the subject here is the woman and her expression and gesture, not the bubbles.

Cute capture.

The B&W version is fine, but the conversion is quite flat. Dull and lacking in the right tonal range in the desaturation. I'd suggest to use the dedicated Black & White conversion tool and manipulate the reds and yellows carefully to get the right contrast and textures in the skin tones, where you'd want accentuated in such an image.

The Photoshop B&W Adjustment Layer works very nicely for this.

Or one can directly manipulate the colour channels, in pretty well any software going.

There are lots of methods to try. I read a magazine article some time back that described about a dozen different ways of doing a mono conversion. Just sucking out all the colour is the least likely to yield anything decent.

This tutorial is excellent in explaining the different methods of conversion, with the exception of Photoshop's Black & White tool which this page explains well.

Another good practical tutorial goes through each method in step-wise fashion: 7 Black and White Photoshop Conversion Techniques | Phototuts+

I like the color version better myself actually, the selective color on the bubbles may have looked nice but it didn't really work, at least for me.
