Astro Shots
Lens: 600mm Camera: Super Program Photo Location: SGO ISO: 400
Posted By: WillCarney, 04-07-2010, 01:11 PM

Here's a few shots, not your normal photo shots by any means. The Atlas mount needed a little more alignment so I got some field rotation around the sides. I also got some halo's on brighter stars since I did not use my VR filter. All in all not bad for film pictures. These are .jpg's from the film CD with no processing.

M42 at 10 minutes. A ST-120 f/5 telescope at prime focus.

At 15 minutes.

At 20 minutes.

HorseHead and Flame Nebula at 10 minutes.

M44 at 10 minutes.

This is the first time I got shots of the HorseHead nebula. Not a bad start.

fantastic stuff! can you share a snapshot of your setup? I've got an old department store Meade 4.5" reflector with the "auto star" but no idea how to go about hooking my K-x up to the very flimsy plastic focusing unit.

Impressively done with film (if I understand it correctly). M42 is a pain since there are some rather bright areas to deal with as well as some softer/darker ones.

Sorry for the delay in response. Was not online much due to my mothers health problems. Yes it was indeed film. I will have to look for the type. It was either Fuji color or Kodak Gold. Here's a shot of my scopes, well at least two.

The C-8 is on the left and the ST-120 is on the right. My ST-80 was not on that time. Both are mounted on a goto Atlas mount.

These are great! I should give astrophotography a try sometime, it looks like a really fun subject.

I am really Impressed. M42 mount lenses is not your "everyday lens" as there are some rather bright areas to deal with.
Looks interesting, this astrophotography. Maybe I will start with the moon shot first when I have the time.
Thanks for sharing.

Cheers.

Will, what film did you use? The images are very nice, though your fast refractor is really showing a lot of blue haloing. A good demonstration, that film is still be a good sensor in astrophotography for wider fields. Did you scan the negs/slides or prints?

Amazing shots, you did very well with using film. I can't believe you got these shots with a 600mm telescope, I really need to get out more.

Thanks. The film was Fujicolor 400. The telescope is an Orion short tube 120mm x 600 mm refractor. I hope to do more as we get clear Moonless skies.
