Castle of Åbo/Turkku, Finland
Camera: K-7 Photo Location: Åbo/Turkku, Finland

This is the castle of Åbo/Turkku in Finland. Founded in the 12th or 13th century as a stronghold for the Swedish rule over Finland, supposed to have been at that time the only stone building in Finland. Most famoused inhabitant is probably Prins John (well not that prins John), duke of Finland, whom eventually replaced his big brother and became king Johan III of Sweden. He ran a somewhat chilly Renaisance court up here.

Hey, what are the people doing at the back door of the castle???

DA55-300mm

Two photographers were doing some model work in the cold weather...poor girl. No I wont post any shots of the photographers, their cameras were too uggly.

The 20mm again, inside the castle walls.

My own model

Saint George and the dragon, 13th century

I counted to nothing less than four churches inside the castle.

Great shots, it looks like a really beautiful place. I really like the second one with the white snow and the towering castle under that amazing blue sky.

Well done!

Ha-ha I've been there! of all the places in Finland... I loved that place some sweet architecture and you captured it very well in your photos. Great photos with nice contrast.

I particulary like number eights composition. very subtle and almost minimilistic.

Cool shots. The girl in the red dress looks like a James Bond Girl. You should have put a gun in her hand! Well done. JIM

Very nice, Douglas! I actually tried to visit that castle last summer, but contrary to the earlier announcements it was closed that week day and the previous time I'd been there I was probably just a few years old. So thanks for letting me see what it was like inside. You know, we don't have that many historical sites of this magnitude in Finland.

BTW, Turku is spelled with one "k" over here in Finland.

I've actually been sitting in the ferry harbour next to the castel twice with loads of time to kill and thought that now I/we can see the castle, but it has always been closed before. This time we had 15 hours to kill because our ferry was cancelled because it was stuck in the tough ice on the Baltic. And you can't keep kids sitting in a ferry terminal for that long time. But a castle (where real princesses had lived!), and a visit to the city center with lunch and ice cream and some shopping at Stockman saved the day.

Sorry about the k...
