Finally . . . . Some Gulls in Flight
Posted By: Sailor, 04-08-2010, 07:27 PM

Today, I drove over to "the beach" for lunch and some "lubricated" landscapes (seascapes, really). I only shot one, but I did get some pictures of gulls in flight (seeking food on the restaurant's deck) that aren't - for the first time - totally embarrassing. I know they're not in the same league as those from Pinkflood, Marc, Jan, charliezap and others, but . . . dammit . . . . . I'm keepin' 'em.

I like #3, as well. You might be able to crop out the ground to good effect.

They are, indeed, laughing gulls. Wouldn't it be reasonable to call them black-headed gulls? It turns out that that name is taken, but by a bird with a less black head. Go figure.
I'll give the cropping a try. They're probably laughing after messing on someone's pristinely clean sailboat.

And dammit Jer you should keep 'em. Really nice captures.
Thanks - I really appreciate it.

That is some great work in catching these in flight, and tack sharp too. Nice one.
Thanks, Paul.

Thanks, Dave - you're a scholar and a gentleman. I suspect those A-Frames are rentals, but Surfside Beach is a funky place - a number of permanent residents also live on this barrier island.

Nice shots Jer. Very Hitchcockian.

Did I just hear Tippi Hedren scream in the background?

Thanks, buddy. You know, despite the fact that I saw The Birds when it was first released in the '60's, the connection never occurred to me as I sat (with a Bud) on the restaurant's deck and shot these pictures.

We must be about the same age as I saw it in the theater as well. That being said when there are that many birds around I'm normally running for cover.

That many sparrows would send me indoors as well - it's just that I'm around seagulls so often, they don't spook me.
