Finally . . . . Some Gulls in Flight
Lens: 70 mm Photo Location: Surfside Beach, TX ISO: 100
Posted By: Sailor, 04-08-2010, 07:27 PM

Today, I drove over to "the beach" for lunch and some "lubricated" landscapes (seascapes, really). I only shot one, but I did get some pictures of gulls in flight (seeking food on the restaurant's deck) that aren't - for the first time - totally embarrassing. I know they're not in the same league as those from Pinkflood, Marc, Jan, charliezap and others, but . . . dammit . . . . . I'm keepin' 'em.

Fine captures. In the 2nd one if you cloned out a couple of the birds on the left it would just about look like (terminology fail here, where you merge a few photos together) it was a cloned image of one BIF. They are all much better than anything i take TYFS

I remember a movie that started like this in a small town near me once...

Hi Jer--Very nice gull shots. Are they "laughing Gulls" like the ones that i saw in Clearwater?Try bringing food--cornchips--pretzel sticks or just about anything will do. Keep the wind at your back and throw some food around and you will find that they will literally hover in front of you making for some interesting shots really close.--charliezap

Good sharp photos with the exception of a few fast wings Nice detail in the eyes too with the head being black like they are.

Great photos.
I appreciate the compliment. Yeah, I remember that movie - I saw it first run when I was 16 (1963) - it was quite a schock for the time, sure scared the stink out of me.

I'll try that technique, Capt. Here, others were doing the feeding, and I was standing to the side. It was truly a gorgeous day.

Really cool photos, the birds are just so sharp. I hope you gave them some payment for being so photo friendly.

I like #3, as well. You might be able to crop out the ground to good effect.

They are, indeed, laughing gulls. Wouldn't it be reasonable to call them black-headed gulls? It turns out that that name is taken, but by a bird with a less black head. Go figure.

That is some great work in catching these in flight, and tack sharp too. Nice one.

They owe me, Cory - for all their dive bombing runs on my freshly waxed boat!

Perhaps my favorite lens, Shub. It is exceptionally sharp in my totally subjective opinion.
