Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos
Posted By: rparmar, 04-11-2010, 03:39 PM

Let me take you on a photographic tour of Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos in Cordoba, Spain.

We start with a perspective from the garden itself. As the other pictures follow it should be possible to build up a mental map of the site.

Susannah in the gardens

(I am sure my wife will not mind leading off the set!)

These are just lovely photos and it was so nice of you to arrange them in order of the transition from one place to another.

Cordova, if I remember correctly, was once occupied by the Moors for a considerable period of time. For an excellent book on the expulsion of the Moors from Spain and the rise of the Inquisition (coinciding events), try Dogs of God: Columbus, the Inquisition, and the Defeat of the Moors, by James Reston. Interesting historic events are my other hobbies, aside from photography.

Thanks for sharing these pics!

Oh yeah, the whole area was once Moorish. Cordoba is distinctive in having been a thriving community of Christians, Jews and Islamic people at the same time. Besides churches and the temple, we visited the synagogue, one of three from the medieval period still extant in Spain.

Going back further, I am sure you know that Malaga was a Phoenician city, and they were a pretty kick-ass bunch of sailors and traders who ventured further than anyone else at the time.

Thank you PentX Girl.

As an addendum I will include one shot from the medieval synagogue I mentioned above. In comparison to the Mezquita it is tiny... a single room. And for that reason less impressive. But... not so at all. The synagogue is full of amazing spirit and a reminder of the rich times in which Christians and Jews and Muslims lived together in peace and prosperity.

It has happened before; it can happen again.

What a amazing place, I really like that shot with all the pools. It looks like I could have a fun time there if I had my camera as well.
