Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos

Let me take you on a photographic tour of Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos in Cordoba, Spain.

We start with a perspective from the garden itself. As the other pictures follow it should be possible to build up a mental map of the site.

(I am sure my wife will not mind leading off the set!)

This is the tower from the first picture, looking straight up from the floor to the ceiling, which is quite distinctive. There are in fact two towers in the complex, but only one can you climb to the top.

On top of the perimeter walls, at the same level as the room in the previous shot, we can get to the second tower (to the left of this shot) and see this small dome and loads of distinctive roof tiles.

And from that same battlement look down into a small room we cannot quite see for tiles.

Instead we can look into the large inner courtyard. A wacky perspective to get it all into 12mm!

Now we'll go up that first tower to the top. And look down upon other people taking photos. What I love is the tiling everywhere in Andalusia. So much care and detail taken! The most contemporary tile is done in the same style as the oldest.

(Filmic colour curve applied for fun.)

Looking out over the city from the same place the minaret of Mezquita is the most obvious landmark. This area is the old Jewish quarter, an incredible maze of tiny streets and lovely homes.

One last view from the tower, in the opposite direction, to the main garden from where the very first photo was taken.

It's time to go back down to ground level. These pools are in the Moorish style but actually are not as old as that. It's not always obvious what is original and what is imitation. (And there's my daughter.)

Off to the side of the pools is a small pond. The gardens are quite regimented but lovely in the sun. (It rained before and after our visit to these gardens.)

The statues in the garden are contemporary, but rather remind me of Lord of the Rings.

The other side of the courtyard are these old (really old) Islamic baths. They were converted to torture chambers for the Spanish Inquisition!

After this exhausting tour of Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, won't you join me in town at the tapas bar? Great conversation and lovely surroundings. In fact, close to paradise on earth.

Even if you are not hungry, try a tapa or two. The small portions provide everything from small sandwiches (not pictured as we ate them already!) to cod fish stew to grilled peppers, which were totally yum! Before you know it, you have had for or six plates of food. After several drinks, afternoon is wearing on, and it is time for siesta. Our tour is at its end!
