WASP: Macro shot with a kit lens?
Lens: 55mm Camera: K100D Super ISO: 200
Posted By: ismaelg, 04-11-2010, 07:36 PM

Hi,

The Lens Protection Society will sue me for abusing my lenses beyond their call of duty
Who said your 18-55 AL kit lens can not do macro duty in a pinch?
Yes, I know! It is NOT a macro lens. But that won't stop me from trying and have fun with it.
I manually focused it to the minimum focusing distance. Turned AF off and got close until I hear the focus confirmation.

K100D Super ISO-200 1/80 f6.3 55mm FL -0.3 Exp comp. Manual flash @ 50% power (I think)

Next picture was me running like hell been chased by them

Thanks,

Request you post the picture of you running like hell with cloud of wasps in pursuit. It might make the PPG!

The kit lens gives a great macro ability (1:2.9 I believe) so I don't know if the Pentax lens police are going to get you, but watch out for Canon and Nikon, I don't think their kit lenses can do cool things like that.

Great shot, I would of cropped out the lower wasp, it doesn't add much to the photo, I would also have used a tele lens from 50 feet. You should get an award for bravery. thanks for sharing. Bob

Moisten some tobacco leaves and place on the spot where you got stung - it will draw out the pain. Then go out and buy a huge lens so you don't have to risk your life like that anymore. Really though, you did quite well with the kit lens.

Very nice shot, I really like the soft focus as it really adds to the image. Also, your quite brave to get that close, if it was me I would have been heading the opposite direction.

We should cut him some slack at least until the swelling goes down.

I agree with the earlier crop suggestion but that's a shot you should be very proud of. Better than many I've seen done with a macro lens.

Ditto here

Nice macro! I've often used the DA 18-55mm ALII as a macro-ish lens too! It's amazing how close it will focus--I think Pentax didn't really tout all the lensy goodness this little sweetheart packs. . . Low noise, virtually no vignetting, low barrel distortion, good saturation of color, gosh I could go on all day! A new beauty has replaced it in my lens love though: The DA 12-24mm--yowsa is that a nice chunk of glass!

Very nice!
I never thought the 18-55 to be capable of this!

I tried macro myself, with the 35-135 in my sig. Lets just say, bees do not stay still for long. So I know how much effort this took haha.

And I also know how intimidating it can be to see the bee flying right at your lens, through the viewfinder haha.

Nice shot!

I love a nursery. And some of the little darlings are still to hatch. Aaaaaaw....

Nice use of the kit. There are several threads currently about how viable it truly is.

I disagree with the cropping suggestion. Hives are busy places and having more than one wasp in the shot suggests this. Now its time to own up...you actually smoked the hell out of these things to calm them down, didn't you

Thank you all for your comments. Actually, we didn't get stung. We ran away at the first sign of "fuzziness"

Thanks!
