A lonely tree, against the sky during sunset.

Not quite monochrome, but close.
Lighting here was difficult and hasn't rendered the scene well IMO.
The sense of drama is lost with the unimpressive sky.
The composition is OK, but central and less impacting.
Has potential nonetheless.

I agree with Ash on the sky, it would have really helped if some clouds were up there as a backdrop. I like the composition, but next time try not to center the tree and use the rule of thirds for your composition.

The sky says "storm" to me not sunset. And the tone of the ground almost suggests rain. I think it's tough to pull off any shot emphasizing sunset in B&W. Sunsets are known for fantastic light and color. If you could crank up the contrast in the clouds and create more of a sense of turmoil, it could work as a B&W. That might not be what you shot but it might be the effective image you could create.

Nicely done, I'm curious to see how black and white would look.
Nonetheless, suiting title for a great picture!
As Tuner said, I think it'd look a bit better offset to the left. Try cropping it with a rule of thirds grid.

This photo makes me sad. I kind of want to go and hug the tree, it's not the trees fault that it's alone.

Your processing is a little strange though, and if you really wanted to add the despair of the tree to make it moody, I'd recommend cooler colors.

Thank you Ash, Tuner, Geezer, Snub and jct us for your comments.

It was taken on a hot day with the cloudy sky just over the horizon on a beach over the west coast, near a mangroves area.
Never-the-less will take note of all your comments to make the picture better.
