Sunset @ the beach. help me choose the best one
Posted By: mediaslinky, 07-21-2007, 11:09 AM

I was in CA last week, and we went to Huntington Beach one evening. California is in the middle of what was described to me as the "July Gloom" which means that there is a significant fog around the shore, which limits the view. Something to do with cool water and warm ground and cool wind. I don't know but... it affected my pictures, still some turned out OK, at least interesting. Vivitar 75-205mm on a DS.

I treated them with Post Processing some, and was wondering what you guys thought...

Now with more straightening.

All are very good, but if I had to choose, it would be #1.

I quite like 1 and 3. 3 has a 'ghostlike' quality to the city in the background and draws your eye away from another 'typical' sunset picture. The exposures on the series are all well done.
Honestly though, you need to straighten the shots first. All but the last 2 are in need of help.

Believe it or not, I did straighten them a bit. I can work on it more. I have been taking really crooked pics lately.

hey we all do it. It's a matter of taking a little more time (when the shot allows this) to look at what you're shooting. You'll see the distracting elements that need to be cropped with a new shooting angle or adjusting the zoom and so on. Here's #1 straightened.

Edit: After posting it I though humm it's 'over' straightened. But that horizon is deceptive and not that easy to "look" straight. The haze makes it tough to do and would have been even harder to do thru the viewfinder. I best be more careful with my "advice" posts Lol

Hi Slinky,
Each has its own unique quality, but the last one does it for me.
Cheers

I'd have to say #2 would be my favorite, if you hadn't cut off the silhouettes at the knees, otherwise it would be spectacular.

So #3 takes my vote as the best. Nicely done on all.

When I took the shot I planned to crop the kids out (that really is the bottom of the frame), but decided even though they were cut off to leave them in. If I could just go back in time and re-frame...

All good in their own way, but I particularly like the composition of 1. Especially like 2 as well but it's a pity the people were chopped off at the knees.
