Recently I attended an awesome airshow in Wanaka, New Zealand, which was also the first real airshow I have been to. Here are some photos of 'planes to start things off:

This Corsair was awesome, fast and I love the radial sound

Harvard trainer/T-6 Texan

PBY Catalina

P-40 Kittyhawk, with Chinese markings (I believe?)

Spitfire

Douglas DC-3

Mitsubishi Zero

Very cool series of shots, my favorite is definitely the spitfire. It is one of my favorite old planes with the P-51 mustang right underneath that. I also really like the Corsair as well, the detail is awsome and I bet it was amazing to see in person.

Thanks for sharing these great photos.

Those are great shots...the thunder of those piston engines are amazing. The P-40 is a replica of the AVG- American Volunteer Group...the famous Flying Tigers flown by Americans for the Nationalist Chinese. If you look underneath cockpit you can see the the flying tiger emblem that Walt Disney Studios designed for the group. Very rare to see a Zero flying....love WWII era planes...awesome shots...

Great stuff.

Spitfire still has to be the coolest propeller-driven fighter of WWII. Nice to see one in the air where it belongs.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'll add more to the thread when I can. Need to dig out my P-51 shots among others.

Thanks for the info Charlie, appreciated. I vaguely remember reading a book about the flying tigers a long time ago, might have to try and find it.

I find it hard to pick a favourite! But the Spitfire was majestic and graceful when flying, really quite amazing.

To be an ass, you said "Warbirds over..." most of these are on the ground... that is soo miss leading...

but I like them all the same... I wish we still had our air show...

How did that zero sound? I have heard they have a very distinct engine roar...?

Warbirds over Wanaka is the name of the airshow! I didn't think of it like that!
Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow - New Zealand

The zero didn't have the original engine unfortunately, but it still sounded good

Thanks
I still need to process the Mustang shots, I think I wasn't completely happy with them on the 'first pass', but I'll get some up soon.

Meanwhile here's some more Corsair:

And some classic Spitfire:

Nice shots, Jason.

First images of yours I noticed were the birches and lichens; now these. Great range!

Out of curiosity, was a Mosquito at the show? It's my favorite. (My son will be glad to see the Zero here and the Mustangs in your other thread.)

Thanks, grey goat.
Unfortunately there wasn't a Mossie at the show, however this airshow that I'm thinking of going to next year will have one, which will later be based in the US I think.
Nice to hear that your son will like the photos too. Thanks for the comment.

cheers,
