Haven't had time to take many pictures lately, (2 weeks, I was going crazy). My wife has been working her butt off, but that means I got to spend a lot of quality time with my son... Yesterday morning I snuck out wicked early and nabbed a few pictures.

I love the IR Dan- it does indeed belong in the Sci-Fi catagory - expecting Mulder and Scully to pop in at any momment.

Edit - I mean number 1 as well - outstanding composition

I gotta try this IR stuff. Number 3 is a "nice" shot but number one is stunning, beautiful and surreal at the same time. As soon as it opened I was in awe. 2 is good as well but overshadowed by the first image.

I think I have to start your IR pictures fanclub. First one is just pure brilliance. Reminds me the movie Avalon.

All good pics but no 1 is stunning/dramatic with an other worldly feel. Great composition also.

Surreal. I have no idea how to PP like this, but I wish I did. Looks like an alien - but altogether pleasant - world: "beam me down, Scotty".

What are you using for this IR setup?

"secrets" revealed

I'm no IR expert, by any means. I've taken maybe 50 IR pictures with this camera, and that's a generous estimate.
But here's what I do, setup and post processing. (and it really is very minimal PP)

Setup:
Hoya RM72 filter on, take a white balance reading off a sunny patch of grass (have it set in manual with aperture open full, or pump up the exposure compensation to +2 before you take a WB reading, or else you'll get a "NG" which I assume means "no good".
Then I take the filter off and compose the scene, put the filter back on and (autofocus) and take the shot. Now taking a WB reading really isn't necessary, because you can do it all processing the RAW, but I like to get it close so I can see better on the LCD what I've got.

Post Processing
I open up the image in PS Elements 5, in the white balance I'm usually setting the color temperature around 2200 with tint of around -55 to -60. (This is in ACR, I don't know how that tint value converts to other programs)
I came up with this by using the white balance tool in ACR and just clicking around the picture to find a point I liked, then maybe tweaked it a little from there.

ACR also has a both a vibrance and a saturation slider, but they're only at around +10 to +20.
I've tried pushing those way up to see how it affects things, and you can come up with some really wild stuff, but I have a preference for the sepia-like feel of how these ones came out.

That's it - like I said, not really a lot in the way of PP, only setting the color temperature and tint when converting the RAW.

I highly encourage you all to try it if you can, it's very addicting.

aabram: sounds like a very good movie, after I checked out the link. I'll have to see if any of my local rental stores have it, or perhaps try Netflix or something, sounds like something I would enjoy watching.

and thanks for the comments (everyone).

Chris: not big bucks... if you can bag your lunch a few days you could get one, depending on your filter size... This one (52mm Hoya RM72) only costs $40.

Best birthday present my wife ever got me.
I suggested it to her, but that makes no difference.
