Motoball
Camera: K200D Photo Location: Pattensen/Germany ISO: 400

Sunday afternoon I was watching a Motoball game. These guys (and one girl) are completely crazy! A real fun to watch. For those not familiar with this game: the poor goalkeeper does not have a motorbike and must be very brave!

Hope you like the shots!

Haha that's brilliant! Great shots too.

Can they just block someone, what are the rules?

You didn't mention shutter speed, are they moving pretty fast? or is it a lot of stop and go?

It is a pretty rough game, at times 3 or 4 players crashed.
Each team has 4 players plus goalkeeper. The court has the size of a soccer field and the plan is to kick the ball into the (soccer) goal.
Very strange when the mechanics have to do some weld repairs while the game continues

Shutter speed was 1/800.
They are pretty fast and when they brake the rear whell blocks again and again. Nice power slides and drifts all the time.
The only girl in the German top league is playing in the "blue" team.

Wow, that is one sport that I wished I picked up on! Your photos seem to capture the action really well; however, I believe that a faster shutter speed would have helped you out here. But other then that these are great shots and I really enjoyed viewing them.

Thanks,
Cory

What a crazy idea of a game. I have never heard of such a thing. Kinda like Polo and Soccer mixed with REAL horsepower. Sounds dangerous and FUN!!! Great action shots!

Wow! Magnificent action photo!
Your photos seem to capture the action really well.

I have one suggestion - try to catch the same action with :
1) a faster shutter speed
2) a slower shutter speed
See the difference and see if you like it.

Anyway these 2 pictures are great shots and I really enjoyed viewing them.
Thank you for sharing.

Cheers.

Thanks for your suggestion. I did try some shots with slower shutter speed but was not very happy with the results. Could not figure out the best balance between some sharp and some blurry areas. I did the same comparison during a "real" Polo match and actually liked the "blurry" shots better because the dynamics of the game came out pretty good. What do you think?
I'll continue practising anyway. Cheers.

Isn't Polo the one with REAL horsepower?

Well, I know what I consider REAL horsepower. I have a Honda VFR (my wife and my daughter have horses)

This is very nice. The polo shot, I feel is better with the slight blur to denote the action of the game. This picture is taken from the side view as opposed to the earlier shots which is on a frontal view. In the polo picture, I find the blur blend in with the background here.

Cheers.

Thanks very much for your comments!
I think these panned/blurred photos work if you have fairly sharp subjects (like the riders, the polo sticks, the head of the horse) as well as blurry subjets (the backgroud and the legs of the horses) to indicate the speed and dynamics. For that you need subjects with different relative speed.
For the motoball shots I could not reach the desired results, on top of this the background was not good at all for panned shots.

You can find some more examples here:

Thanks again!

Indeed it is not a very common sport, not many people may be crazy enough I guess
