F*300 Powerboats
Posted By: Mike19, 07-23-2007, 03:29 PM

A selection of shots from a Powerboat meeting on Oulton Broad near Lowestoft, Suffolk in the UK.

All taken with my K10D which I have had for a couple of months now, still getting to grips with the transition back to an SLR after a 23yr break!

Mostly taken with an F*300, the first and last are with a Sigma 17-70, I used a polarising filter on both lenses to reduce the glare off the water.

All PP and RAW conversion done with bibble.

Any constructive comments and suggestions welcome.

This first one is actually the only one without the polariser.

The next two are pretty much straight into the sun, thanks to the polariser and lens hood glare was kept to a minimum.

This next is my favorite of the series.

The next two show the 180 degree turn at the botom of the long straight.

I tried to capture some action around this marker, next time I will try to get on the exit side of this turn for greater impact.

Thanks for looking

Interesting pics. Looks fun. Good shooting, crisp but giving a sense of movement. 3's my favourite as well.

Thanks for the comments Paul,
It was an interesting afternoon, I think next time I will try to capture more action with two or more boats in close proximity to each other particularly around the turns.

Good job Mike - all are crisp and good freeze frame. The second one you might want to crop the heads of the crowd. Other than actually taking pictures from in the boats (now that would test water sealing and shake reduction!) the rest are spot on !

Thanks for the interest Dave,

Yes! I did wonder about cropping out the crowd, in the end I decided to leave the heads in to add some interest to the forground and give the image greater depth, but I guess it would be cleaner with the heads cropped out.

Getting out in a boat to shoot - now there's an idea!! I will have to see if I can arrange that next time, although with all the chop around from the powerboats it would need to be a good sized vessel to get any sort of stability.

Does anyone know how wet you can get a K10D without doing any damage?
I had imagined a short spell out in some moderatley heavy freshwater drizzle might be all I would risk - anyone got any experience of how wet is safe?

Thanks for the interest again

Mike
