M42s shoot the sky
Lens: Asahi SMC 135 f3.5 Camera: K-x Photo Location: Christchurch NZ ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: >6s Aperture: F5.6

I'm now enjoying taking photos with M42 lenses more than the K mounts. Using Aperture priority and a couple stops of compensation they expose well.

First star shot is with a M42 SMC 135 f3.5 which I am growing very fond of. Exposure was 20minutes (which is the longest I have tried so far). Like the way the colours came out.

Second is a moon shot with Soligor 400 f6.3. Heavily cropped (this is full crop) but still not bad. I have had some good results with this lense despite being a cheap purchase (US$21).

Good effort with the gear you used.
The moon shot ain't sharp or rendered with good contrast but it's a good result for 100% Soligor crop.

Wow, that first photo is really interesting. How did you get the sky to turn that color because of the long exposure? I really like that, and I honelsty have never seen anything like that before. I would think that is light pollution since it's such a long exposure, but I've definitely never seen a photo of it like that before.

Thanks Ash. I don't expect it to be perfect but 400mm has its uses.

Yes I was surprised by colours too. I live on the outskirts of Christchurch city so there is a bit light (and probably bit of air) pollution present. Because of this the shot out of the camera was lacking contrast and light brownish background. I loaded into Gimp and increased contrast and this is the result. I was quite surprised.

Wow, that first shot is really cool with those star trails! I have never tried a 20 minute exposure but this photo has tempted me to try one. I also like the photo that you took of the moon, even though it was heavly cropped it still looks pretty good.

Thanks for sharing,
Cory

I have done only a few moon shots, at 300mm. What I find the most intriguing is how the three-dimensionality of the surface is clearly visible. Good job we have an uncommonly large moon, us Earthlings!

But the first shot is a lovely abstract with colours that just happened to turn out in an interesting way.
