Blue Heron + Steve's 1200mm Monster
Lens: FA* 200mm f/4 Macro Camera: K20D Photo Location: Beacon Hill Park ISO: 200
Posted By: seanix, 04-23-2010, 08:22 PM

Steve with his A* 1200mm. I like to refer to it as "the Beast!"

This is my best Heron shot at 200mm cropped down 1/3 to 4.9 mega-pixels:

I walked across the park to a bridge and took this shot of Steve with my 200mm (no cropping), let's wait and see what his shot of me looked like. Steve, could you post it in a reply?

Hey Warren,

I had a good time...and will give more of a heads up so everyone can make it next time... I had to laugh at the shots of me...ducking down. The thing is so long that I am one moment crouching to look up and then next on my toes trying to look down

Here is the shot I was taking at the same time....good comparison of 200mm vs 1200mm... No pp done to this shot, just converted straight to jpg.

Very cool, thanks for posting that. I had good time as well! I wish I had a longer lens now... not 1200mm, but a 300mm or 400mm sure would be nice.

Wow, that lens is gigantic, he must need a special kind of camera bag to be able to fit it in there! I like your bird photo too by the way, but his photo of you is really kind of spectacular especially considering that it wasn't cropped at all. Very nice!

WOW, that lens is huge and I love the difference between it and the 200mm. Maybe someday I will have the means to pick one of these up but I really doubt it.

I bet that you guys were getting a lot of stares while shooting in that park, that thing just looks like a bazooka.

Steve, you simply MUST go to one of those Canon-user shoot outs, where they assemble their 500/4s or 600/4s. They will certainly all switch to Pentax, after seeing this lens.

The camera looks so small when hooked to the end of that monster. Is that an istDL he's using?

Yes, I will. I need to spend some more with it before I can properly review it and I should finish my portion of the screwmount database first. So far it's been much better than I thought it would have been for the FL.

Most of the questions come from other photographers. The usual question is regarding the focal length and whether it is a Pentax "400mm or 600mm". There quite often a look of wtf when I say 1200mm.

I was hoping to get someone on the Island or Mainland here to pick up the other 1200mm that was listed in another thread....show up for a local gathering with 1200s...that would draw some attention.
