"Dobsonfly" Close-ups

This insect was spotted on the kitchen floor, quite big- I think they can get up to like 4 or 5 inches... Anyway, grabbed some shots:

Great Macros - looks like someting from the movie Men in Black. Bring out the flame thrower !

Great crisp macros. Looks like it has a formidable set of mandibles. Any ideas on what it is?

He's correct - it's a dobsonfly, a female in fact. Have a look at Search - BugGuide.Net and you'll see some serious mandibles! The males go a little overboard...

Nice shots, too bad it was on your kitchen floor and not some pretty vegetation! I wish one of these would come into my kitchen...

I'd imagine these are quite hard to find out in the wood. I feel lucky to have spotted it in my house! :P
