Pelican In Flight - First Sail of '10
Posted By: Sailor, 04-27-2010, 07:25 AM

Because of an unusually cold and uncooperative winter, we've not sailed since November - a very long stretch, indeed. Yesterday, we finally got on the bay for a breezy, sunny afternoon. I grabbed several photos to mark the event.

A pelican heads for a day mark:

A couple of routine "boat shots":

Are you sailing with the iron-jib in the 3rd shot? the water looks a little churned up

I hope you have a good time - it's been so long since I've been on a boat, back when there were more hours in the day or something, no time now

Thanks - it was great to be sailing again; I'm retired, so time hasn't been our problem, but the weather has - either ran and cold or sunny with gale-like winds.

Regarding the last shot, the boat was under sail; she's a thirty footer displacing a little over 5 tons, so when she's moving reasonably fast, she'll push aside alot of water.

Hi Jer--It's good to see you enjoying yourself out on the waves. The weather is starting to turn so that we can partake of outside enjoyments.By the way Jer -are you planning on entering my photo challenge "hand held shootout"? If not I could use an honorary helper judge or is it ornery?--Capt Zap

Thanks much, Scott. And you're right - there's nothing quite like a great day in a boat (sail or power).

Hey Cpt. - send me a PM and tell me what this is about; I'll see if I can help (we're going to be out of town in a few days).

Very nice shots sailor, that looks like a really good time and brings back good memories when I used to live in Rhode Island.

Hey - I just discovered what you meant - I never tried one of these before, so I stuck on this pelican shot - fast shutter speed, but I was on a bouncing boat at cocktail hour.

Nice to see you back behind the wheel. I have been following the news on the huge oil slick in the Golf of Mexico. Love the first image bud. JIM

Thanks, JIM - luckily the oil spill is far from us.

Thanks, Jason. Hull speed for our boat is about 6.5 kts - although I've nudged 7 kts coming off a wave in a strong breeze. Typically, in our area, we'll sail between 5.5 and 6 kts.

Great catch on the pelicans Jer.

And I wish I had your sailboat, though you'd have to teach me to sail her. I've lived on a river most of my life and have been on and around boats most of those years, from (40 to 60ft shrimp boats, one 40 fishing boat, and many smaller fishing boats), but never navigated a sailboat.
