F*300 Butterfly
Posted By: Mike19, 07-25-2007, 04:14 PM

I was out for a walk with my sons in the woods near where we live hoping to come across some wildlife to photograph, in the end this butterfly was the only willing subject!

I think it is a 'Gatekeeper' also known as a 'Hedge Brown'

They are all cropped fairly heavely 50%+ and processed with Bibble Lite.

All with K10D and F*300 shutter priority

I also had the DFA 100mm macro with me but found that extra distance between me and the subject with the F*300 minimised disturbance.

#1 1/640th f4.5 ISO125

#2 1/400 f7.1 ISO100

#3 1/640 f4.5 ISO160

I think next time I will keep to 1/400 and maybe increase the ISO setting, to keep the apeture closed down and increase depth of field.

Can I see a spot on the sensor in #2 and #3?

Any comments welcome, thanks for looking
Mike

Nice shots Mike. Looks like the weather is a little drier in Suffolk than here if you can find butterflies out and about. I like the colours. I especially like no2.

Nice shots indeed Mike - like the bokeh on #1 , DOF on #2 (the wasp is pretty much in focus as well) and as Paul mentioned the colors - now that is some serious yellow !

Thanks Paul, we have had the odd dry day in Suffolk, although not many; the flowers were a brilliant yellow - I did increased the contrast and saturation in PP to try and replicate how the flowers actualy looked, whilst trying not to 'overcook' the colours.

Thankyou - I hadn't fully appreciated the subtle impact that, bokeh can bring to an image.

Thanks Dan - These flowers and the butterfly just asked to be photographed, they jumped out from the surrounding sea of green ferns (bracken)
