This thread hasn't seen much action recently; I just acquired a used Tamron 10-24 at a reasonable price and have been playing around with it the last few days. Have taken only a few quick snapshots but I'm quite satisfied so far-- love the ability to go from 10mm to 24mm in one quick turn of the zoom ring. Sharp enough for my purposes and for the price I paid. Surprisingly lightweight and compact, nice balance on my K-X. I may end up using this zoom more than my DA 15 when traveling-- super convenient!! (But obviously I'll keep the DA 15 for times when IQ is of the utmost importance).

A few quick snaps, both at 10mm.

I've been googling around and not found a good answer to my question -- maybe you folks can help. How does this lens perform at 24mm, stopped down to F8-11?

Thanks in advance!

If you stop the lens down to f/8-11, it's arguably at its sharpest both at the center and the corners. At 24mm, it's a little less sharp than its sweet spot of 12mm-20mm IMHO. But I've used it at 24mm to get nice group portrait shots outdoors. In fact, I just used this zoom yesterday at a Children's Garden in Ann Arbor, and I used aperture priority mode the entire time with it set to f/8. Nice sharp pictures and great colors, very pleased with the results! I can't stress enough how convenient I am finding this lens-- going from an ultra wide angle to 24mm at a quick turn of the zoom ring. I haven't mounted my DA 15mm or DA 21mm in months since I acquired the Tammy 10-24.... but maybe that's also because I know what those limited primes can do, and I'm really trying to kick the tires on my new UWA zoom lens...

Thanks. I have a sigma 10-20mm for my nikon, but I have an Nikkor 18-200 as well, so I only really use the sigma at 10 unless I'm trying to save myself a little cropping in post. 10-24 seems like it might be useful at both ends. My only pentax lenses so far are the 50-135 2.8 and an old manual 50 1.7, and it's driving me *nuts* not being able to take anything wider than 50mm. I know that a 10-20 would leave me wanting something in between 20 and 50,but 24 might be enough. I have a 35mm 1.8 on my nikon, and I use it fairly often, so some prime in between 24 and 50 would probably be a decent compromise. (now, the 135+ side of things has me looking at a Sigma 150-500, but hopefully I can keep that urge down for a while yet. lol)

What do you think?

I can tell you from experience that you will definitely want something between there. The Tamron 17-50 is good, and at 24mm rivals some primes. If you're set on a prime in between there the DA 35 f/2.4 sits right in there. Also, get the Sigma 150-500. It's fun.

I'm in the same boat. While I have the 18-55 stock lens, it sits in my closet. I carry the Tamron 10-24, DA*55 and DA*60-250. I've been trying to decide between the 35 2.8 macro or the plain 35 2.4 but I've also contemplated selling the Tamron 10-24 and getting the DA*16-50 as well :/ It sometimes drives me nuts that 24 is TOO wide and 55mm is too narrow >:\

You're not good for my wallet. I think I'll rent it first.

On Amazon I saw a lot of complaints that the focus ring on the Tamron 10-24 spins when it's in autofocus and you have to be careful not to touch it. That sounds really annoying. Is it true for Pentax? The review I was reading was for the Nikon version, I think.

I've not noticed this behavior; it may well spin but I don't touch it, nor am I deliberately being careful to avoid doing so. It's not been an issue for me.

Would you or someone else be so kind as to verify whether or not this happens? Because based on that and my prior experience with the Sigma 10-20, I just bought a Sigma 10-20, and IT has a razzerfratzin spinning focus ring, and doesn't even have an AF/MF switch or any other override, so to focus manually I have to shut off AF on the front of the camera.

I'm happy to take a look tonight once I get home and confirm it for you. I'm pretty sure that my 10-24 does not have an AF/MF switch either (the Nikon mount version looks like it does have that switch, but I believe it's missing from Pentax mount). I have a feeling that the focus ring probably does spin during AF; why would it be any different for Pentax mount, if the other camera mount versions have that behavior? By the way, there is no "quick-shift" type of manual focus override available with the 10-24.

Yes, the focusing ring definitely spins while focusing. Never noticed it before. I hold the lens by the zoom ring and never touch the focusing ring near the end of the front element.

That's funny, I never noticed it either.

So I have been looking through this thread in the past before I purchased the lens. Now having it, i do not find that it is as sharp as I would like. You can see my latest use and description here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/232285-tested-k-5-w-my-current-lenses-next-steps.html

I purchased this lens used so I cannot just return it for another. Sending it in for repairs would have a cost also.

My edited shots are here: 907 Broadway - a set on Flickr

Here are a few jpegs straight out camera that I wasn't too happy with:

Am I being pickier than I should or is there real issues with lens? I want crisp/sharp images. I went about it to try and get the sweet spot- Iso 80, w/ tripod f8-f11, 2sec shutter release. Comments?
