Spiratone wide angle close ups and macros

Spiratone Plura-Coat 24mm 2.8 close focus and extension tube macro

I had forgotten I had this lens and then something nudged me to try some close focus and macro work. Mostly these shots are wide open at 2.8. The ones with extension tubes are pretty extreme and all have been Lightroom'ed to a greater or lesser degree. The extension tube shots had a very low yield

Two Rose of sharon shots in the rain. No extension tube wide open. Everything on a K50

Mild extension tube shot wide open, Rose of Sharon

Two extreme extension tube wide open

Cleome

Crepe myrtle

acoufap - for reference, it was the middle size of the official pentax K automatic set. Any more and I think the object would have to be inside the lens to be in focus:-)

Hey, I could use some advice. I'd like to get be able to get some macro shots, mostly flowers, and I'm looking at two lenses. First is the Pentax 100mmm-D FA WR and the second is the Sigma 17-70mm. The Sigma is $50 less currently and seems to have pretty good reviews, however, the Pentax has better reviews. If I'm using it solely for macro, would the Pentax be better? Thanks for any help.

Also, there is a person selling the 17-70 on CL for $300, which would be $250 cheaper. If the IQ isn't that significant, that might push me towards the Sigma.

For macro, I would prefer the 100. You have more room between the lens and the subject for any given subject size. This is important when you want to take a picture of the bug on the flower. The 100 macro also will give you an image at 1:1 magnification, which means that a 16x24 object would just fill the K-3 sensor, while with the 17-70 you would need to crop for similar magnification.

It is really good to have an at least one real macro lens and from what I can see the 100mm WR should do that. Beyond that you can get really amazing effects with vintage lenses and extension tubes. The cheapest way to go is with m42 and Takumars and third parties, but it is also possible to get PK tubes that will work fine with K and M, plus 3rd party lenses. The longer reach of the 100 mm iss lovely for most macro work, but an extended wide angle can create nearly magical viewpoints because it decompresses the view instead of flattening it.

PM sent

I certainly am no expert but I like using my SMC Pentax-D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro

it is a short telephoto with 1:1 macro capability. It isn't the newest model - the one you mentioned, mine has no WR or some other features, but it has the same optics as the newest model and I saved $ buying it from a member on the Market Place.

good luck and have fun

here is an image I captured today using it with my K 3
