If you can ever get "on a run" on a walk, this was it: Marbled White, Brimstone.
How did you find a Marbled White settled like that?! There's a field with them local to my workplace, but I spent an hour there and never once saw one stationary.

Cheers

I think the first one is actually a Gatekeeper...
That was actually my first thought, but I was "corrected" by the rangers in the reserve. They said that the meadow brown and hedge brown/gatekeeper populations were not distinct.

They would only have had the camera screen to look at,.(ISO 2000 BTW).

I'm happy to edit the ident to Gatekeeper..

Luck.......and botany. According to Butterfly Conservation the Marbled White "flies in areas of unimproved grassland" and "shows a marked preference for purple flowers such as Wild Marjoram, Field Scabious, thistles, and knapweeds. Adults may be found roosting halfway down tall grass stems".

Arne is a heathland reserve. Just a few metres into the long grass was a patch of thistles. This individual was roosting exactly where I would have expected it..

All of those photos were taken 5-10 metres off the paths. I rarely get a butterfly photo I like without standing in long grass or thorns.

Still on that one lens walk, this one would have been much easier to take with my Tokina 400mm at closest focus. Easier, and less squelchy - I'm standing in a bog to capture this Emperor female laying her eggs:

Well, it looks pretty distinct to me: lots of orange, double eye-spots on the forewings, orange and small dots on the hind wings. Can't tell the size, of course... Here it is on our current favourite ID website.

I think mine must be colour-blind - they're in a meadow full of ragwort, quite close to another field which does actually contain thistles, but no Marbled Whites! Unimproved grassland is right for both. I did manage to score a slightly tatty Silver-washed Fritillary in the former, and a glimpse of a White-letter Hairstreak in the other, so I need to go back soon.

Cheers

A few more from my old Vivitar/Pentax FA 100mm /f/3.5 Macro. The ants are 100% crop from the wider flower pictures.
