But when I do

Interesting juxtaposition, and one reminding me of a bit of a linguistic "pet peeve": "macro" literally means "big", right? So how did we get the current usage which equates "macro" with "magnified"? Seems to me the stars-picture, now that's really "macro". The bee, well, that's "micro". But then, any good telephoto lens and some wide-angle lenses, can be used for "macrophotography" - the 1:1 ratio doesn't really matter anymore (what's the "equivalent" on an APS-C sensor, anyway?). I'm not sure any of these distinctions really make sense anymore.

Thanks, by the way, Gifthorse, for posting that combination. I think there's some logic implicit in the choices.

I think the original intent was 1:1 or greater magnification of small targets, which would make them "macro".

Three blossoms

Three blossoms using macro lens. This lens offers excellent sharpness, contrast, and color fidelity but has noisy, hunting prone AF, which is okay by me since I prefer manual focus for macro work.

KIT K-1 with Phoenix 100mm f 3.5 macro.

This lens, a bargain approach to macro, was produced by Cosina and sold under a number of different brand names including Pentax and basically the same as Pentax-FA 100mm f 3.5 except some say that the Pentax version has an improved coating. You can sometimes locate real bargains on this lens, even below $50, by seeking out a non-Pentax brand such as Phoenix or Promaster, but the Pentax branded ones seem to go for much more, around $100.
