I prefer the first one. Its softer and thats maybe a nice contrast to its purpose?

Thanks, an on-camera flash was used. I believe it was my Sigma EF610. I usually use my Metz58, but the batteries were charging in that one at the time..

Well, I finally caved and bought a DA 35/2.8 Macro Ltd. in the Marketplace. Although I can go all obsessive/compulsive from time to time, I'm not really a serious macro shooter. I do like sharp detail shots, though and feel more comfortable with shorter lenses for that sort of thing (the extremely thin dof of the longer macros can really be a PITA). This lens fits that bill to a T and the rendering is very nice.

Beautiful shot! Spring flowers in February - man I need to move south!!

I do a lot of flower shots in the summer of my wife's many gardens - my main shooting that time of year. I see you used off camera diffused flash - would you mind sharing your setup?

Over the winter I've acquired a nice light stand and 42" umbrella that I plan to use with my Metz AF-48 for the flower shots, but in theory I am thinking the umbrella will be too big for single flower shots. Any advice on what to use? I was thinking of getting an 8" x 9" softbox that attaches to the flash directly (would still be using it off-camera on the light stand).

Thanks! Just a few blossoms for now, but this is the usual time for the first appearance of Claytonia, Trout Lily, and Hepatica. On the down side, summer is not so good for flowers here; have to get up to the mountains then.

I'm just getting into flash, so still experimenting. The camera was on a tripod and that allowed me to handhold the flash and diffuser in different positions. I just used a piece of translucent polyethylene (cut from a bottle) as my diffuser. I plan to get a small-ish softbox to attach directly to the flash, and some sort of clamp and flexible arm to allow me to attach the flash to a tripod leg. I'm using a 70mm macro lens so the working distance is pretty small at 1:1, hence the need to get the flash and light modifier in close to avoid having the lens cast a shadow on the subject; an umbrella would have been too big for this case. Also it's a question of light fall-off -- whether you want a close-in light source to isolate the subject, or something farther away for better background illumination. So I think the umbrella will serve you well for shots of massed flowers.
